Summer Camp History and Background
The Dallas/Fort Worth Cross Country Training Camps
Training camps began in 1998 to help local runners prepare for the cross country season. Initially the camp was a half day only, and a little over a dozen runners attended. It was obvious from this first year that there was a need for a full week camp for serious high school runners, so the second year the camp was expanded to a sleep-over full week camp and 35 campers attended. Numbers increased rapidly to 127 in 2003 for the Gold camp and over 30 at the Silver camp.

Part of the growth stemmed from the success campers were having in high school local, regional, and national meets. The growth came mainly by word-of-mouth from previous campers who promoted the camps for serious runners who want a tough week of running.
To date, over 300 camp participants have run in State cross country championship meets in 3 states. Ten runners have reached the Foot Locker National Championships; three qualified twice. One three-time camper reached the top in the sport of cross country, winning a spot to represent her country in the World Cross Country Championships, in Dublin, Ireland. Valerie Lauver finished 36th in the World Junior Championships, and returned as camp coach at the DFW camps. Four-time camper Erin Bedell also represented the USA on its junior team, twice in cross country and twice in track, and returns as a coach.
Participants in the 2004 camps won numerous Region and State titles at the various meets held in October and November. The highlights were the two UIL State Meet course records run by Erin Bedell (10:39) and Scott Macpherson (14:34) who both attended camp two years in a row and return as counselors. In 2006 a full four-fifths of UIL State cross country champions on the girls side were campers that summer.
In 2010, Rachel Johnson qualified for both National championships again, winning the Nike Cross National Championship and placing second at the Footlocker National Championship. Rachel attended camps in 2009 and 2010.
2011 was a year for many campers to improve and reach the State meet. Most important Karis Joken, state champion and NXN qualifier..
2012 - This camp really came through with great runners like Cameron Villereal, Alex Davis, both qualified for NXN nationals. Alex also was the first girl to qualified for Footlocker Nationals from Oklahoma.
